What Was Blaster Worm W32 And The Security Concerns It Raised

The famous virus which hit the whole IT industry was first noticed on August 11 2003. This virus posed a threat to the entire Microsoft Windows Desktop operating systems like Windows Xp and Windows 2000. In a month after it was noticed the Worm had spread like a wild fire involving lot of home users. The chaos gripped the entire Desktop users and they ran for Microsoft help and tech support.

This worm was targeted to attack the Windows update site and Microsoft taking immediate note shut down most of its servers for windows update site. The port attacked by this Worm was port 80. This virus had strings and messages attached to it which were a clear warning to Microsoft chairman Bill Gates. Till the time any Antivirus or Microsoft could release a patch people were calling help lines. All the help lines had a call answering time of around 90 minutes. Hp support, Dell support, Online Microsoft support and third party tech support companies were already running short of manpower to answer the queries of the affected customers.

This worm used to attack a computer by shutting down some of the critical Microsoft services which in turn would shut down the computer. The Windows services affected were RPC (Remote Procedure Call). The mode of failure of this service enabled a computer to shut down. A very common message was displayed on all the affected computers.

This system is shutting down. Please save all work in progress and log off. Any unsaved changes will be lost. This shutdown was initiated by NT AUTHORITYSYSTEM
Time before shutdown: 00:60
Message:
Windows must now restart because the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Service terminated unexpectedly.

In the initial days of its release the tech support engineers had no clue as to how they would fix the issues pertaining to the Blaster. But later certain mechanism was developed which would prevent the shutting down of computer.

Later Norton and Microsoft research and development came out with certain steps to prevent the virus shutting down the computer. These steps included disabling the mode of service failure to take no action instead of restarting the computer. Microsoft support, HP support, Dell support and third party tech support vendors directed the customer to the Microsoft website to download the removal tool or Norton website for the removal tool.

Online microsoft help, windows help also provided steps to remove the virus. But till the time the tool was developed Windows XP operating system was already in danger because of its security concerns. Later Service pack 2 release fixed most of the concerns of the end-users.

The person who developed and deployed the virus was later tracked as Jeffrey Lee Parson an 18 yr old boy from Hopkins U.S who was later sentenced to 18 months of imprisonment.

Computer Security Ethics and Privacy

Today, many people rely on computers to do homework, work, and create or store useful information. Therefore, it is important for the information on the computer to be stored and kept properly. It is also extremely important for people on computers to protect their computer from data loss, misuse, and abuse. For example, it is crucial for businesses to keep information they have secure so that hackers can?t access the information. Home users also need to take means to make sure that their credit card numbers are secure when they are participating in online transactions. A computer security risk is any action that could cause lost of information, software, data, processing incompatibilities, or cause damage to computer hardware, a lot of these are planned to do damage. An intentional breach in computer security is known as a computer crime which is slightly different from a cypercrime. A cybercrime is known as illegal acts based on the internet and is one of the FBI?s top priorities. There are several distinct categories for people that cause cybercrimes, and they are refereed as hacker, cracker, cyberterrorist, cyberextortionist, unethical employee, script kiddie and corporate spy. The term hacker was actually known as a good word but now it has a very negative view. A hacker is defined as someone who accesses a computer or computer network unlawfully. They often claim that they do this to find leaks in the security of a network. The term cracker has never been associated with something positive this refers to someone how intentionally access a computer or computer network for evil reasons. It?s basically an evil hacker. They access it with the intent of destroying, or stealing information. Both crackers and hackers are very advanced with network skills. A cyberterrorist is someone who uses a computer network or the internet to destroy computers for political reasons. It?s just like a regular terrorist attack because it requires highly skilled individuals, millions of dollars to implement, and years of planning. The term cyperextortionist is someone who uses emails as an offensive force. They would usually send a company a very threatening email stating that they will release some confidential information, exploit a security leak, or launch an attack that will harm a company?s network. They will request a paid amount to not proceed sort of like black mailing in a since. An unethical employee is an employee that illegally accesses their company?s network for numerous reasons. One could be the money they can get from selling top secret information, or some may be bitter and want revenge. A script kiddie is someone who is like a cracker because they may have the intentions of doing harm, but they usually lack the technical skills. They are usually silly teenagers that use prewritten hacking and cracking programs. A corporate spy has extremely high computer and network skills and is hired to break into a specific computer or computer network to steal or delete data and information. Shady companies hire these type people in a practice known as corporate espionage. They do this to gain an advantage over their competition an illegal practice. Business and home users must do their best to protect or safeguard their computers from security risks. The next part of this article will give some pointers to help protect your computer. However, one must remember that there is no one hundred percent guarantee way to protect your computer so becoming more knowledgeable about them is a must during these days. When you transfer information over a network it has a high security risk compared to information transmitted in a business network because the administrators usually take some extreme measures to help protect against security risks. Over the internet there is no powerful administrator which makes the risk a lot higher. If your not sure if your computer is vulnerable to a computer risk than you can always use some-type of online security service which is a website that checks your computer for email and Internet vulnerabilities. The company will then give some pointers on how to correct these vulnerabilities. The Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center is a place that can do this. The typical network attacks that puts computers at risk includes viruses, worms, spoofing, Trojan horses, and denial of service attacks. Every unprotected computer is vulnerable to a computer virus which is a potentially harming computer program that infects a computer negatively and altering the way the computer operates without the user?s consent. Once the virus is in the computer it can spread throughout infecting other files and potentially damaging the operating system itself. It?s similar to a bacteria virus that infects humans because it gets into the body through small openings and can spread to other parts of the body and can cause some damage. The similarity is, the best way to avoid is preparation. A computer worm is a program that repeatedly copies itself and is very similar to a computer virus. However the difference is that a virus needs o attach itself to an executable file and become a part of it. A computer worm doesn?t need to do that I seems copies to itself and to other networks and eats up a lot of bandwidth. A Trojan Horse named after the famous Greek myth and is used to describe a program that secretly hides and actually looks like a legitimate program but is a fake. A certain action usually triggers the Trojan horse, and unlike viruses and worms they don?t replicate itself. Computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses are all classifies as malicious-logic programs which are just programs that deliberately harms a computer. Although these are the common three there are many more variations and it would be almost impossible to list them. You know when a computer is infected by a virus, worm, or Trojan horse if one or more of these acts happen:

Screen shots of weird messages or pictures appear.

You have less available memory then you expected

Music or sounds plays randomly.

Files get corrupted

Programs are files don?t work properly

Unknown files or programs randomly appear

System properties fluctuate

Computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses deliver their payload or instructions through four common ways. One, when an individual runs an infected program so if you download a lot of things you should always scan the files before executing, especially executable files. Second, is when an individual runs an infected program. Third, is when an individual bots a computer with an infected drive, so that?s why it?s important to not leave media files in your computer when you shut it down. Fourth is when it connects an unprotected computer to a network. Today, a very common way that people get a computer virus, worm, or Trojan horse is when they open up an infected file through an email attachment. There are literally thousands of computer malicious logic programs and new one comes out by the numbers so that?s why it?s important to keep up to date with new ones that come out each day. Many websites keep track of this. There is no known method for completely protecting a computer or computer network from computer viruses, worms, and Trojan horses, but people can take several precautions to significantly reduce their chances of being infected by one of those malicious programs. Whenever you start a computer you should have no removable media in he drives. This goes for CD, DVD, and floppy disks. When the computer starts up it tries to execute a bot sector on the drives and even if it?s unsuccessful any given various on the bot sector can infect the computer?s hard disk. If you must start the computer for a particular reason, such as the hard disk fails and you are trying to reformat the drive make sure that the disk is not infected.

Best Malware Software – How to Find Out the Best Malware Software

With so many malware removal programs out there today it can be difficult to decide which would be best suited for your malware problems. I can tell you what features to look for and how to decide which is best.

First you need a little background on the definition of malware. Malware is a combination of the word “malicious” and “software”. It is a harmful program that will install itself on your computer without your permission. Malware can come in many different forms such as viruses, worms, trojan horses, adware, and most dangerously – spyware. I say spyware is the most dangerous form of malware because while the others can mess up your computer and slow it down, spyware does that AND steals private information such as credit card numbers and passwords.

So in order to fight malware you need a program that can detect spyware, adware, viruses, and other harmful files. This immediately rules out lots of programs that focus on just one kind of threat. To properly protect yourself against malware you need a versatile detection and elimination program that covers ALL threats.

You can of course just download an adware remover, spyware remover, and anti virus software. But wouldn’t it be easier to just get an all in one program. They are out there you can and you can check below for a recommendation.

The next feature to look for is real time protection. Detecting and eliminating is half the battle. You need a robust program that can prevent any potential malware from infecting your computer. This typically comes in the form of “ActiveX” protection.

And lastly the best malware software is designed by cutting edge companies leading the fight against malware by providing constant updates of new threats. Unfortunately for today, the present anti malware industry is largely reactive. Malware threats are constantly changing and the only way to continuously protect yourself is by purchasing your product from a company that stays on top of new threats via database updates. This is why I recommend staying clear of a lot of “free” programs with no support system in place to fight the latest malware threats.

These are the top features to look for in the best malware software. If you are interested I have created a website My #1 choice happens to have all the features listed above. Come on in and get your free scan from the best malware software on the market today!

Free Adware Removal Tools – 2 Important Reasons To Exercise Caution

People are often ticked off when they encounter various pop-up ads which come out of nowhere in midst of their important work. When you browse the internet, there are websites which open up suddenly displaying several products up on the screen. They could undoubtedly annoy anyone for that matter. A few of such ads may disappear, however, quite many of them persist and keep bothering with the pop ups. In such cases adware is the actual culprit. Adware is always held responsible for any pop up ads and similar material coming on to your system. Fundamentally, adware is a program which tracks down your surfing pattern. As it gets proficient in this activity of the user, various ads are routed towards your screen when you surf the internet. These programs also spy on the user’s keyboarding style especially when the account numbers and passwords are typed in subsequently memorizing the details. We could also say that an adware sometimes acts similar to any spyware.

1. What would an adware preventing tool do?

A lot of software security companies provide users with several free adware removal tools so that they get rid of the commonly distracting and annoying pop-up ads. Typical Spyware and adware removing tools would not only deal with eliminating such instances but also hold responsible in the detection of suspicious programs which often keeps crawling through the network systems to harm the user’s personal information. Adware-Spyware removal tools could quickly and easily get rid of the Spyware, Adware, Key loggers, dialers and Trojan horses. Many On Guard features included which prevents new infections from malicious programs and provide real time protection. The user gets the protection as he works and would not need manual scanning for detecting the virus. Several antivirus program packages are sold for intimate protection and its installation is easy involving only a few mouse clicks.

2. How could a free adware removal tool go about it?

At the outset, it scans all the fixed and removable drives and the memory subsequently repairing the Windows registry. Such tools often make use of the CSI (Code Sequence Identification) or the Technological advancement so that the suspicious software hindering the system performance is traced and removed. Almost all damaging and aggressive programs are removed. It sum it up we can say that most of the free adware removing tools would secure your credit card numbers, passwords of accounts and varied personal information from any harm. Ensure to get your system a free and genuine adware removing software as the fraud ones could carry malicious programs to cause irreparable harm to your machine.

Never get caught up with the tricks of such pop up ads. One should be alert enough to not click on any links automatically popping up on the screen. The spyware and adware would work together to steal your private details and information, thus deceiving you. Some links often drag you towards them; however, by clicking you would realize that you simply opened the gateway to viruses which would work to attack your machine. You must always trust on leading manufacturers offering you with free adware removing software as they would definitely ensure security against all identity robbers.

Trojan Vundo Removal – How to Remove Trojan Vundo

Trojan Vundo is a trojan that is not easily removed by conventional anti virus products. You will experience your anti virus informing you that trojan vundo has been detected but you will be unable to remove it after scanning and rebooting your computer a few times.

Trojan Vundo has many variations. The common one which infects many computers has the following sympton. When you boot up your computer and access the Internet with Internet Explorer, you will see multiple random ads appear. New tabs are opened and this causes your PC to use up resources to cater to these Ads. If you have a slow computer that has installed many programs, this can bring your surfing experience to a crawl, as your PC has to share resources not only displaying the webpage you’re trying to visit, but those of the pop up ads as well.

The other Trojan Vundo variations are more dangerous because they can leave your computer open to back door type infections. Back door basically means a hacker can now install a Key Logger Trojan on your computer, which detects password type sites and is able to phish your password and user name, then storing it on their database.

That is why some usernames and passwords are compromised and posted to warez sites. If your credit card and ss number is compromised, this could lead to identity theft where online scammers use it to make purchases over the internet.

Safety rules to avoid Trojan Vundo is not to open file attachments that do not look familiar to you. Even from someone that you know, its better to delete the file if the file does not look safe. Some emails say, “hey check this out”. Once you double click on the file, the Trojan Vundo is installed, and your computer has been compromised.

Trojan vundo requires a good updated trojan scanner to remove. Obsolete and free scanners will often inform you that Trojan Vundo was detected and unfortunately not able to remove because of the many heuristic variations of this trojan.
