Worms are similar to viruses in that they replicate themselves and spread to different computers. The difference is that they do not need a host program to run and they can spread automatically over a network or the Internet without the computer user having to do anything. Malware is the general term used to describe all of these nasties – viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware and any other kind of malicious software that you don’t want on your computer.
Exactly what destruction that they cause depends on which worm you have. The destructive element of a virus or worm is called the payload. Like viruses, worms can be programmed to do anything – if a malicious programmer wanted to write one that completely wipes all files off your computer that is possible, as it is also possible to program one to simply open and close your CD drive.
The important thing here is how can you protect your computer and the data on it from attacks by any malicious software? With automatic programs like worms out there it is no longer enough to be careful which websites you visit and what email attachments you open. The answer is to have a good antivirus or Internet Security program that protects you before emails are opened and before files are downloaded (manually or automatically) from the Internet. I personally recommend an Internet Security program as these give you greater protection than just an Antivirus.
If you go to http://www.datadefender.net there are reviews and comparisons of the latest software from the major antivirus companies. There are download links to the suppliers so that you can start protecting your computer today (as well as clearing up any problems already on there!). All of the major suppliers offer free trials (30 or 15 days) so that you can try before you buy if you want to. The site also has descriptions of the various kinds of malware to give you a bit more information about the differences between them and how they can get onto your computer.
A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computers on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms almost always cause at least some harm to the network, if only by consuming bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer.
