Worms are similar to viruses in that they replicate themselves and spread to different computers. The difference is that they do not need a host program to run and they can spread automatically over a network or the Internet without the computer user having to do anything. Malware is the general term used to describe all of these nasties – viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, adware and any other kind of malicious software that you don’t want on your computer.
Exactly what destruction that they cause depends on which worm you have. The destructive element of a virus or worm is called the payload. Like viruses, worms can be programmed to do anything – if a malicious programmer wanted to write one that completely wipes all files off your computer that is possible, as it is also possible to program one to simply open and close your CD drive.
The important thing here is how can you protect your computer and the data on it from attacks by any malicious software? A computer worm is a self-replicating computer program. It uses a network to send copies of itself to other nodes (computers on the network) and it may do so without any user intervention. Unlike a virus, it does not need to attach itself to an existing program. Worms almost always cause at least some harm to the network, if only by consuming bandwidth, whereas viruses almost always corrupt or modify files on a targeted computer.
